Coliving Chill Out & music in Las Palmas #Comty Diary

Winter has been very sunny in our city. On our Coliving Chill Out in Las Palmas, sunbathing is an option during breaks, before a new call, or after hours in front of the computer…

The smell of fresh coffee or some nice cooking is all over the kitchen, it´s so inspiring to work in an open sunny space, where conversations pop up so easily…

We are a small community, we like to be an intimate space, where members can know each other and start a good relationship…

Flexibility

Our terrace, chill-out, and kitchen are the heart of our community, in the last few months colivers have changed or moved tables and sofas twice in the common area…

They can do it because the space needs to fit their needs…

Community members have different needs and likes, the community terrace can be as flexible as possible to help them enjoy the experience of our coliving…

In an incredible conversation with Cornelia one of our community members, she shares with me something about living in our community.

She said… “we are used to being treated as customers, and being said what to do”

But in EcoIsleta we promote creativity, colivers can suggest activities, move anything from one place to another, and improve something they think is not working well, takes time to get used to it…

Many activities in EcoIsleta are suggestions of community members, we don't have a close schedule of activities, we prefer to listen to the members and see what they want to do…

Our main goal now is to find ways to let new community members know they can be creative and suggest anything, as fast as they are welcome…

Intimacy and privacy

Most of our members have never been in a Coliving before, for some of them is an experience that could be complicated to handle, not everybody is used to dealing with people from 5 different countries at the same time…

Talking with another coliver about the community, he explained that sometimes living with 7 people from all around the world could be overwhelming, with different cultures, traditions, and personal peculiarities…

Some members feel they need to stay alone for some time and kind of take a break from the community, in our house with two floors and individual rooms that´s always a possibility…

When we do dinners and other events, more than 30 people can join, and we know some colivers need time to get used to it…

Movies

We watched another movie, this time a documentary about veganism, Vegan Alert this was a suggestion of Ivar a Swedish coliver who was interested in watching and talking about this topic…

These topics are very important for our community, after the movie we talked about veganism with 3 neighbors who also came to watch and talk…

The debate was quite good and we wonder how to get this vegan topic to schools in the neighborhood...

We already watch on the terrace the Architect a movie about the housing crisis…

Eco-Jam Session

For the first time, and thanks to Cornelia's suggestion we had a Jam session, we loved it… some colivers sing very well, I was impressed…

We have to thank Cornelia for being so smile-fun-open, sharing-helpful, and always suggesting for our community in the last few months... we are so lucky to share our lives with these amazing people...

Plants

Also with the help of Cornelia we went to a local plant nursery where we got some local plants for our terrace… she is excellent with plants and they are growing very fast.

We also used our compost, made with the worms we have in the vermicomposter…

Sunsets

Love these sunsets in La Puntilla... we are in the city but surrounded by beauty...

Beautiful sunsets in La Isleta

Have we gone too far with our community values? #Community Diary

Community Dinner Coliving Canarias
Ropa Vieja Dinner

Too many times I´ve heard from different people that our community values and goals are impossible…

“You are crazy”, “You are not going to get that”, “Are you kidding”... Even some colivers think so, which is tough because they are supposed to come to our community because of our values…

For many years in my life, I thought big goals would lead me to get nothing, to waste my time. I used to think, If I don't achieve it, sooner or later I´ll quit…

That mindset helped me to live an easy life, with everything under control, not too much adventure… But in the long run, I have learned that easy goals don't help me to discover who am I...

EcoIsleta Coliving

For some reason, I keep working for goals that are out of my possibilities, or extremely difficult to achieve…

Many people think that Zero Waste Coliving is impossible. Even when we opened the first organic shop in our neighborhood, people laughed at us, no joke. And what about working for a sustainable neighborhood…

Maybe I can´t turn our neighbourhood into a sustainable place but working for it, is a dream come true…

Community vibrations…

These last few months have been quite intense in our community, with some amazing groups of colivers living together.

Thanks to them we have done hikes, workshops, dinners, and movies. Don´t think we did one activity a day, or something like that, I´m talking about 2 months doing one activity a week…

Some of them work very well and some of them didn´t work at all. We are not afraid of making mistakes, sometimes when we try very local activities or not very popular dinners, anything could happen…

For example, we try our most local dinner, “Ropa Vieja Canaria”  but in a vegan version, a delicious dinner that took more than 2 hours to cook. Ropa Vieja is not on many restaurant menus, it takes too long to cook, also it is too local…

But it is probably the real taste of the Canary Islands, together with Sancocho…

Colivers didn´t like it, and they did other activities, honestly, not too many people thought it was worth it… Come on, I know, what is “Ropa Vieja” definitely doesn't sound like Paella

We stand for a community that works to help you understand our culture, not the “marketing culture” we have built for the last 50 years based in Colombus and other fake cultures for tourists…

We work for other values, like it or not is our identity as a Coliving and as islanders…

Sometimes I think we have gone too far with our sustainable practices and also as you can see sometimes we go too far with our local propositions… This is a question I asked myself many times…

But we believe in our values, our culture, our identity and we have to keep working in that direction… with an open community to everyone sharing our values…

Small coliving = intimate dinners

We had the pleasure of having a dinner made by one of our members, Daniel, he is a real chef… We ate everything, I mean he did it with love, and also he worked very hard to make everything delicious, we can only say thank you for cooking for all of us, we loved that dinner…

By the way, he was working while cooking, I couldn´t believe it...

It is quite impressive to see how some groups of colivers develop a very good relationship in a few weeks, there is an article about our Coliving in Travel and Tapas giving some clues about us...

Travel and Tapas "As a smaller coliving, with no host living in the house, the community grows close together pretty quickly. There is a strong family feeling, but not from the cliche “we are a family” perspective, but from the perspective of a real raw family."

Paella dinner

We also had some Paella dinner... with the help of many of the people that came to the dinner. I had an excellent time and the conversations were great...

Sometimes I compare community with surfing in the sea, some days conditions are not good, for many different situations, but other days the waves are beautiful, the wind is perfect, and the sun shining...

Let´s take another wave...

Building our Coliving Community in Las Palmas

Working remotely has many advantages, for example working and living in a good Coliving community in Las Palmas, flexibility, freedom, increasing your networking, and meeting new people and cultures.

But also like everything in this world has disadvantages, loneliness, disconnection from your community, monotony, lack of social connections, etc

In the long run, you can find yourself, working and sleeping in the same room, alone, which can cause, serious health problems

This lack of social life will affect your health and also your productivity. Before going remote you should consider talking with other remote workers, and set a plan to avoid loneliness.

Look for options like coworking or coliving spaces, to see if they can help you in your new working situation. I mean you should research how to handle remote working…

Self-discipline is also another challenge for many office workers that jump into remote work. Still, luckily there is already good bibliography to research and that's something you should consider as well.

“Building in-person interaction bolsters the immune system, sends feel-good hormones surging through the bloodstream and brain, and helps us to live longer” Susan Pinker

The CO spaces, Coliving, Cohousing, Coworking…

We are social, we need to feel that we belong to some community and that we can talk and be listened to by someone who cares about us…

We recommend you be curious about communities, be open to change, and build relationships based on authenticity,  this will help you to avoid loneliness in your apartment and also to keep productive in your job.

We are facing massive loneliness challenges on our planet, too many people live alone, but communities can work to help all of us feel belong and cared for.

There are many different communities, yoga studios, Salsa groups, foodies, coworking communities, etc…

EcoIsleta Community in Las Palmas

In EcoIsleta we work in two different ways, we have our shop, where we try to help neighbors to connect and talk with other neighbors, taking into account the importance of a good chat in a local shop.

Also, we have our Coliving, where we focus all our energy on helping colivers to feel the power of a Coliving community in Las Palmas, enjoy deep talk, have dinners together, engage in our local community to understand our culture, go to visit the island with other colivers, etc…

We also open our community to the city, helping other travelers to meet with locals and remote workers in the house. For us, our main goal is to help remote workers to connect with locals and also understand our culture…

It is not easy, but all our efforts go in that direction…
